14th March 2009 In the aftermath
of the drenching that the coastal regions of Queensland received from
Cyclone Hamish, it seemed possible that the mountain top operation at
Mt Wolvi might have to be abandoned. However the sun wanly peeked through
the grey skies on Saturday, 14th April, 2009 and a contingent from Gympie
Communications and Electronics Group made their way to the top of Wolvi
Mountain.
This was to be the first club contesting activity since its foundation
in 2008. Preparation had been made for some weeks and the members enthusiastically supported
the project. As a "dip your toe in the water" type activity
it was decided that the club would enter in the 6 hour segment and would
start at the beginning of the contest, 0100UTC.
Members arrived early at around 6.00am and commenced the set up of the
different operating positions, Jason VK4MIH and Neil VK4FNFR assisted
Greg VK4FGDW in getting the Bushcom antenna installed nice and high, Jason
demonstrated that he was a wizz at throwing a spanner (all caught on camera).
Barry VK4KKN displayed some versatility with his fishing rod in erecting
the 40m antenna using some strategically placed trees for support. Roger,
VK4BNQ supplied a portable generator which supplied the station equipment
and after the manual labors it was time for a well earned cuppa.
During the course of the day more club members ventured up the mountain
as they were released from other duties. After some good contesting experience
it was time to dismantle and retire from the site. It was a satisfied
group of members who made their way home but already the talk has turned
to how better to enjoy the John Moyle next year.
Apart from manning the 20m station, Greg, VK4FGDW was prepared for recording
the day's events and his photographs have been placed on the group web
page and can be viewed in the photo album page
5th March 2009 At the last group meeting on Thursday the 5th March we were thrilled to have Jeff Johnson VK4XJJ give us a presentation on his recent epic adventure where he walked from the Spencer Gulf to the Gulf of Carpentaria raising funds and awareness for the Deaf & Blind Association (NSW)
Below is some information from Jeff's website: www.gulf2gulf.org/ Jeff Johnson, self-confessed
‘bushie’ of no fixed abode, decided almost on a whim to walk across Australia,
south to north, to raise funds for charity. Spurred on by the memory of
his deaf-blind niece, whose death was the catalyst for this extraordinary
undertaking, he battled hoons, the fear of an attack by dingoes and the
vastness of the interior to achieve his aim. Surviving on what he could
carry on his back, and without back-up, he walked 2500 kilometres in 151
days. This is the story of his walk, the outback characters he met along
the way and, of course, the untamed grandeur of inland Australia.
